boot problem after installing LFS on a USB stick

I installed LFS6.8 as per the book on a USB stick. Everything spick and span except at the end, when GRUB refused at first to install itself claiming some area or other was too small; but since it gave me the option of installing anyway with the --force parameter (and I was so damn near the end), I went for it.

Ill-advised impatience: when trying to boot I got:

Code:
Root-NFS: no NFS server address
VFS unable to mount root fs via NFS, trying floppy
I am sure there must be an elegant way out of this ...

I've only seen that when installing an OS (either Slackware or Gentoo, can't remember which) with a small kernel which didn't load a module for something or other that I needed - I never worked out what, but using the 'huge' slackware kernel and the 'generic' gentoo one managed to fix it for me. So I'm guessing it's not to do with the GRUB issue though it still could be, I guess...
