5.3 Binutils problem

Hi, I am trying to compile binutils-2.15.94.0.2.2 in Red Hat 9. I tried what it says in the manual:
../binutils-2.15.94.0.2.2/configure --prefix=/tools --disable-nls

except I had it inside another dir called builds so I tried:

Code:
lfs:~$ /builds/binutils-2.15.94.0.2.2/configure --prefix=/tools --disable-nls
loading cache ./config.cache

checking whether ln -s works... yes

checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.
but as you can see I got an error. Anyone help me with this problem? I am logged in as user lfs like in the manual.

What I suggest is that you look inside the configure file, e.g. with "less," and search for this message. Probably what is going wrong here is some kind of a permissions-problem: no write-access is granted to the directory where the configure file is trying to work. (Configure does a lot of stuff by writing little c-programs on the fly and compiling them.)

See also if there's any kind of "--verbose" option...

Also, there should be a config.log, see where it stops in there, it usually says what test program it was trying to compile and such.
