/usr Directory Growth

All,

I just received a notification that my /usr directory is 85% full. It has allocated space of 1.8G and is using 1.5G.

This is what I get when I run a DF:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/system-usr
1.8G 1.5G 276M 85% /usr

This is what I get when I run an ls -l inside the /usr directory:

total 73
drwxr-xr-x 16 root root 432 Jan 27 11:00 .
drwxr-xr-x 29 root root 760 Apr 8 15:42 ..
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 Dec 1 2006 X11 -> X11R6
drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 192 Aug 10 2005 X11R6
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 26176 Feb 27 10:39 bin
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 48 Aug 10 2005 games
drwxr-xr-x 42 root root 7472 Mar 2 2007 include
drwxr-xr-x 32 root root 11272 Feb 27 10:39 lib
drwxr-xr-x 34 root root 19856 Mar 2 2007 lib64
drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 264 Aug 10 2005 local
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 96 Jan 18 2007 sap
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 9096 Feb 27 10:39 sbin
drwxr-xr-x 71 root root 1840 Jan 31 2007 share
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 208 Mar 2 2007 src
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Dec 1 2006 tmp -> ../var/tmp
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 120 Aug 10 2005 x86_64-suse-linux

So it appears that the directory hasn't been touched since January.
Is it possible that this /usr directory can grow without being tagged with a "last touched" date?...

It seems odd that the /usr directory has grown to 1.5GB and I am just receiving a notification of it now....

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mathew

The timestamp reflects when the contents of a folder were modified. If a file is modified inside of it, this will not change the folder's timestamp.

Try running the following in the /usr directory:

du -kx |sort -nr |head

This will show you the largest offenders for size in /usr.

Thanks slack.
This is the result of what you suggested. What is the '.' representing? The top level directory '/usr'?
Do /usr directories normally swell up?

usbcsap82:/usr # du -kx |sort -nr |head
1557367 .
429314 ./share
310910 ./lib
299227 ./X11R6
244124 ./src
243020 ./src/linux-2.6.5-7.283
231082 ./share/doc
220747 ./X11R6/lib
163748 ./lib64
129979 ./share/doc/packages

It's hard to say, because you have not told us how big /usr was before. It is possible that an increase of just a few mb triggered the warning. My /usr is using 2.2GB. If you want to continue examining this issue, search for the most recently modified files in /usr. Otherwise, it's simpler to just continue monitoring disk usage over a few weeks/months.
