You should be able to find a number of resources on the Web to assist you in installing/configureing SNMPD on your specific Linux host.

I have been using Linux for 8 years now and you know how i learned it was buying reading reading - trying this out - breaking things and even more reading. The original question drives me nuts - have people not heard of Google - a simple good search for Linux and snmp will return so many results its not funny. the best way to learn something is reading it yourself and trying it out

Net-snmp is probably ideal, and probably available out-of-the-box

Hopefully, your colleague also gave you a vague idea of what you're going to be *doing* with SNMP. The purposes it's going to be used for will have an impact on what you set up, and how.

Anyway, here's a good link:
http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/snmp.htm

The odds are pretty good you don't even need to download anything - "net-snmp" is probably already available on your basic distro. Just go into your package manager and look for "snmp".

Please post back (opening new threads) with any specific questions you encounter once you get started.

Hope that helps .. PSM
