server cannot boot up error mounting filesystems

I have a remote server that was running redhate ES 4 (kernel version 2.6.9-42. When they try booting up the server (even in single user mode) they get the following error:
ATA2: translated ATA stat/err 0x51/40 to SCSI sk/asc/asc2 0x3/11/04

ext3-fs: can't read group descriptor 0

mount: error 22 mounting ext3

mount: error 2 mounting none

switchroot: mount failed:22

umount/initrd/dev failed:2

kernel panic - not synching:attempted to kill init!

If it is not even able to boot the root or ext3 filesystem, does it mean there is a problem with the drive? Also, as it is not coming up, i'm not even able to remount it. Does someone out there know what else could cause this? Thanks...
PS- The server manufacturer ran diagnostic tools and found the drive had gone bad. I'd still like to hear any other comments though. Thanks

I asked him but he did not have the CDs, so he's shipped it here. In any case HP found that it was a bad drive and they are sending a replacement drive. Thank you though.
