sendmail SMART_HOST configuration

Hi,

Have just started new job and have been spending time learning the architecture of all the servers. There is a configuration line in Sendmail.mc that is confusing me a little and i wondered if anyone could help.

The line in question is

define(`SMART_HOST',`esmtp:[127.0.0.1]:esmtp:[gateway]')dnl

Now my guess is that this is trying to forward mail to the localhost and if that fails it sends it on to the "gateway".

Is this correct or am i barking up the wrong tree here.

Cheers
