Question samba configuration

Hi,

I want to know which parameters needs to be modified in smb.conf to configure samba share so that it can be accessible from windows.

and I want to configure so some users read only and for some users it should read and write both.

A quick google and found this one. If you place the users in a group that can do certain things then check the public share in the link here as an example. http://sdn.vlsm.org/share/ServerLinux/node81.html

Hi,

If you don't have much samba experience I would recommend keeping things simple, if you don't need to lock down as far as user access I would suggest the following values. This will only lock down as far as the permission you set in the smb.conf file for the shares you create. - you can also further lock down using the hosts allow = tag in the smb.conf

security = share

[example_dir]
comment = example_dir
path = /somedir/example_dir
public = yes
writable = yes # or no you choose

If you do need security to be user based then you need to change the security setting to security = user, this will mean you need to setup samba users using the smbpasswd tool and will need extra flags in each shares config such as vaild users = myuser

This link may help explain a few differences without going over the top
