So far as I know there is nothing that automatically syncs Linux (system) clock to the hardware clock.
There is a command that can be used for doing such a sync though:
hwclock --systohc - Sets the hardware clock to the system time.
OR
hwclock --hctosys - Sets the system clock to the hardware time.
If time is really critical you should have NTP setup to make sure you're getting "real time" from some place (e.g. the US Naval Observatory or a GPS device designed for the purpose). That syncs system time to real time. You could then have a cron job that syncs hwclock to system time using the first command above.
You can use the ntpdate command in a cron job to update time more frequently if the ntp.conf isn't giving you the granularity you need.
