Rhel A S 4.0

Hi,
I am new to linux. I am getting an error message from (RHEL AS 4)linux machine that
" Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that you may be out of disk space. try logging in with one of the failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem."
view details (~/.xsession-errors file)

I logged in the failsafe session as root. I was not able to execute only cd and pwd. I am not able to proceed with dont knowing what to do.

kindly help.
fermin
