Rhel 6.2

Hello.

Any one can tell me how to switch over to GUI mode from command prompt mode in RHEL 6.2.I am unable to switch over.I have installed the "RHEL6.2-20111117.0-Server-x86_64-DVD1" version in my desktop.

Thanks
Anil

Hi Anil and welcome to LinuxQuestions!

The server version hasn't got a Desktop Manager pre-installed, therefore you first have to install it, for example by means of
Code:
yum groupinstall Desktop
then run it using startx. If you want to login directly in graphic mode at boot time, change the default runlevel in /etc/inittab from 3 to 5.

Not necessarily. You can mount the installation DVD and use it as a local repository. Please, follow instructions here.

Please, post the complete output of the yum command. I'd like to see especially the first part where it lists the available repositories.

for red hat
your first stop might be the red hat support
http://www.redhat.com/support/customer-portal.html

you did buy the required license ? right ?
the server license is ( see below )
https://www.redhat.com/wapps/store/catalog.html
$ 349 to above $36,000 PER year

red hat is not really free

then once you do have a licensed and registered install
you can login to the red hat "knowledge base"
-- most questions have an answer there, but you have to be registered with RedHat to use it
https://access.redhat.com/search/quick?

or

install one of the FREE rebuild of RHEL
CentOS 6.3
ScientificLinux 6.3

as to commands
a bit OLD but still very useful
-- an online book --
http://rute.2038bug.com/rute.html.gz
or
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Bash-Prompt-HOWTO/
http://tldp.org/LDP/Bash-Beginners-G...tml/index.html
