reinstalling RH AS4

I installed Redhat Enterprise AS 4 , and I think I have to reinstall it , because of bad updating some programs like X server

Is it ok that I restart my computer and put installation CDs without loosing my data?
I have my current distro on a software RAID and I installed some applications that I don't want to loose their configurations

Thanks
