NFS user mapping issues

I am setting up a shared mount for backups on a NAS. I want to export it using NFS but am having some concerns about user mapping. The mount will be accessed from several different machines by users that don't necessarily have the same UID on the different machines or on the NAS. Should I change the UID's so they're the same on all the machines or is there another solution?

I also want root to be able to write to the mount but I understand for security reasons it is recommended to use the root_squash option. Has anyone else set up something similar and how have you tackled these issues?

Anna

Hi Anna, I am sorry but I don't have much NFS experience and I have only used it in very basic config's - But my understanding is Read and write options are set on the exporting host to allow the client the necessary access. Thus if you keep it simple on the server all you have to worry about is the clients access rights. As far as I am aware UID's and such shouldn't matter if ServerA says ClientB can access the share, read only thats it.. If it says it can read write then that applies for all users of ClientB so what you really need to do is secure the mount point on the Client. At least I think thats right... Hope it's of some help.
