Multiple Version of Java

I am really a Linux Newbie.

I installed jre-1.3.1_20.i586 of java. It went through the install but I can't find where it installed it.

I also installed j2re-1_4_2_12-linux-i586. It hung and did not return to the command prompt. eventually, I had to kill it.

Last I installed jre1.5.0_06 and it went right through and I have located it in /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06.

when I type "java" nothing comes out. "command not found" OK so pathing. but which one?

Then I tried to uninstall 1.3 and 1.4 Java. They are hanging in the install. I can't even kill the process, unless the kill the window.

this gets really confusing. Anyone out there help me?

Why don't you try installing 1.6, as well. The more the merrier you know. This thread is almost certainly in the wrong forum, but if you'd give us a few clues, like what distribution and version of it you are running, someone might be able to help you anyway.
