I think I'm totally off base with what I'm doing. The real problem that I'm trying to solve deals with building OpenOffice. The source rpm from Red Hat is 170mb in size. When I perform the build it consumes all of disk space in the /usr file system.

What I really need to do is to direct the creation and use of any temporary files for building the RPMs to use disk space on /dev/md0 which contains 1.3TB of disk space.

It looks like what I really need is to use the buildroot option on the command line of the rpmbuild command to direct the use of disk1 which is located on /dev/md0 to build the rpm to be installed.

Am I on the right path here.

Yes, that'll be a lot simpler =) Just remember to specify the mount point and not the device /dev/md0 itself.
