modular kernel

i just happened to know a company buying Intel D945 GCNL motherboard based system in 2007 whose ethernet card activation on installing RHEL-5 failed. Later the company happened to buy add-on LAN cards , since the systems were few in number and third party driver would cost more. Now, they again bought same machines, quite a few in number, but activated the LAN card by loading another new kernel version, may be 2.6.22-3 , and making it default one. I just want to know if there are any such cases, some knew so that i can work on it , write a shell script to activate the LAN card by loading the modular kernel and post here the in forums. LKM`s are mainly used for such purposes and i can work on them.
