Install different version of php and mysql in my own home directory

Hi,

At work, I am using SunOS server. I have a normal user account. I'd like to install wikimedia in my public_html folder and use it. Instead of installing on my own computer. The server has old version of PHP and no mysql installed on it. My question would be:

Is it possible to install php and mysql for myself in my home directory and link the php pages in my public_html directroy to use that php version and mysql? Or I need explicit permission from the administrator to do it for me?

Thanks in advance,

The system admin would have to configure the web server service for you, and install and configure mySQL. You wouldn't be able to link to PHP installed where the web server (apache?) doesn't know it exists, and both apache (for instance) and PHP need to know to use the mySQL daemon. I've never tried to configure apache to use two different versions of PHP at once--I'm not sure if it's possible.

You might consider bribing the system admin to install mySQL and upgrade PHP.

Both need to be installed and configured by the admin, and the web server service re-configured (maybe even re-compiled).

No quick and dirty method that I know of.

Thanks for your reply.
It seems I need to hit my head to wall a little to find a good alternative solution.

Thanks again for your reply

Well if you are intending on access your services inside the LAN, you can install apache and php into your own directory, you will need to configure apache to use ports above 1024.

No idea if mysql can be installed as any user other than root, Oracle for example cannot, but that really is only because Oracle are protecting the sw installations from maniacs, so maybe mysql is less draconian???

I would only bother the admin if you need something... for example if you cannot access your webserver - he might tell you not to do it otherwise!
