File order to DLT on SUSE Enterprise 8?

After years of using tar to DLT7000 on Irix, I moved one of the tape drives to the new fileserver running SUSE Enterprise 8 Server.

DLT was found easily and after a reboot a tar -cvf was made of about 2000 numbered image files. To my surprise they are being written to the tape in random order instead of numerical order as happened in Irix.

The files are now coming from a RAID 5, would that make the difference?

Perhaps they are being written in inode order...

Yes that seems to be the case. The server is connected to the network by a bonded trio of interfaces so the files come in the order ABCABCABC.

Not much I can do about it I guess, it would be tidier if the files would be on the tape in numerical order.

Thanks
