Dynamically Adding New HD to a running RHEL3 system

Hi,

I am running RHEL 3.0 on a Dell PE2850. I have a Raid5 array consisting of 3 HDs. Yesterday, I added 3 new drives and created ( using Dell's dellmgr software ) another Raid5 array with those new drives.

Question: How do I get RHEL to see the new array w/o rebooting the machine? Dell PE2850 recognized drives as soon as I installed them -- system running; no issues. No /dev/sdb assignment, yet.

Sun has a program called devfsadm for this purpose, among other things, on Sun systems. Does RHEL have a similar program for dynamically assigning new drives/arrays? I tried kudzu -p to see what it would do, but I did not see the new array show up.

TIA,

Hi JrLz,

Nothing in /var/log/messages

Hardware Raid -- no issues; created another Raid5 array using dellmgr interface to the raid controller while system was still running.

The link you provided assumes that the devices ( /dev/sdxx ) have been created. Also, the discussion revolves around growing an existing Raid array, which is not what I want to do. I've created another Raid5 array separate from the one I already have on the system.

The devices ( /dev/sdb in this case ) are not being created unless I reboot the system. I want to do this dynamically -- while the system is running without disturbing process/users already running on the system.

Regards,
