Why resize rootfs?
Under what conditions or constraints?
What kind of drive are we talking about. how is it formatted, partitioned, what kind of file systems...?
What operating system/Distribution and verson are you using?

To elaborate on wpeckham's request for more information: Google has many pointers. It would be a huge waste of time to guess which specific result of that Google search applies to your situation.
