Rasberry Pi Zero USB/Ethernet Doesn't Connect Under Linux

Hello

I'm tinkering with an updated RaspberryPi Zero, the one with the camera port but not the W model.

There's lots of tutorials on connecting to the pi via ssh over a usb ethernet. Everything goes fine, the device boots and the Ethernet shows up in my networking but for some reason it won't connect, it tries and retries but nothing. I've tried 3 different laptops running Mint 19.* and MX Linux. Finally booted to Windows 7 partition and it connected and I was able to ssh into the pi.

Any idea why Linux doesn't want to connect? Searching the web it seemed like it should "just work".

Thanks

Are you using the IP address or hostname?

I assume you can ping the Pi.

What is the error message?

Have you tried using -v to see if any debug information sheds some light on the problem?

I can't ping either IP or hostname since the connection to usb0 interface is what fails. It shows up under dmesg, lsusb, and ifconfig but network manager tells me it's connecting for a long time before it gives up without an error message and turns the connection off, same result if I try again.

I'm guessing it's just some modules, drivers, or packages missing but I'm unable to find any leads as to what it might be, on the web.

EDIT: I got it connected. This link https://support.criticallink.com/red..._RNDIS_Support put me on the right track. I had to enable a static IP and turn off dhcp for the Ethernet connection on the laptop and it connected instantly.
