I dun see how this shall hurt them.... who cares if you cant use their name as long as people can tell what it is at tuxcd's they still yield enough info *7.3* version and a list of the software to let the buyer know what they are looking at...oh well I am sticking with 7.2 i reinstalled it last night now i am without automake and autoconf i reinstalled those now i need aclocal

Yeah, it seems RH wouldn't want you to use other people's mirrors to d/l their iso. But others do exist.

One of my friends had, from ftp.sunet.se . But it took him three times to get cd 2 (bad checksums).

Actually I think RH and everybody else should change the way this open source deal is handled. Charge for the downloads and be done with it!! I think they could do that.

Nobody will set up servers and pay for the bandwidth so everybody who has a internetconnection can download a distro at the same time.

No it won't - as far as I understand the licensing you can charge for the cost of distributing the distrc. Servers and big pipes cost money.
Most of that non-profit mirrors are universities - so the taxpayer pays for it. Nothing is for free - somebody always gets a bill.

I don't pay taxes - if you don't make anything you don't have to. To make up for that I bought Suse 7.3 - anybody needs it??

It cannot become illegal to download and share. Because of GPL. All GPLed programs can be freely copied (one can sell it, but the person that bought can copy it and give it to other people). Only this not gpled part of a distro can be a problem.

either way I'm up for keep it free. If linux wants to win masses it should be pushed to market for free, and not like Sun StarOffice. They got one version for free for people to start getting excited, and the very next version is payable. You need to build your trust and reputation with customers, not just throw a hook.

I would love to see distros charging for downloads. Hey - all you people got boxes and internetconnections you pay for.
What is wrong with paying for the OS?
If they would charge - doesn't need to be 200.- US$ per pop - development would progress much faster.
I don"t work for free. Why all the developers do what they are doing is beyound me. It is a nice thing they put out all that great software and put the effort into it but I wouldn't.
And I am sure 90 percent of the guys right here on this forum wouldn't either - too concerned about free downloads.

Err...Cheap Linux.net still has Red Hat CDs. They just have a disclaimer. Simple as that. I don't find this bad; its just enforcing a name.

United Linux, well, is not a good thing for Linux. They are following SuSE's business model, which I believe is stupid. These companies are alienating the people who DEVELOPED their products by charging for the CDs and not offering them free.
