What Distro is for ME?!

Hey guys,

I have a pressing issue. For so long now, I have been using Open Source products and currently I am having a very difficult time finding a good distribution of Linux for my PC.

I have tried NUMEROUS distributions; everything from MDK to Gentoo, and everything in between. I have tried:

Red Hat
Fedora
Mandrake
Gentoo
Slackware
Debian
VectorLinux
DamnSmallLinux
Knoppix
Knoppix-STD

I cannot seem to find a good distribution. I can, however, point out what I like about some of those distributions.

To start out, I do not like the simplicity of RedHat/Fedora and Mandrake. It's not for me. I like the choice that Gentoo gives me, and I LOVE the emerge command - I've never had one of those fail. I thought that Slackware may have been the answer for me but the emerde tool (copy of emerge for slackware) is terrible, and slapt-get and swaret are both bad. Slackware is also a tad bit updated, while I can get 2.6.3 kernel optimized for gentoo by simply typing "emerge gentoo-dev-sources".

I tried Debian but not only is it very out-dated (still in the 2.4 kernel) it also is very hard to install and I have never had a successful installation of Debian. I also hate the package management system.

My only issue with Gentoo is that it's hard to manage and many a time I have had my Gentoo fail on me just like that - for no apparent reason, my network card modules sometimes just refuse to load and I did nothing to the system.

Is there ANYTHING for me within these guidelines? Because currently I cannot take Slackware for much longer and Gentoo is just too hard to manage. I can live with Gentoo if it actually starts working for longer (I once had it working very well for a very long time but I decided to update my system to the 2004.0 edition but it emerged the wrong kernel headers so my system went kaput). Any help pertaining to the quest for the perfect distro is greatly appreciated Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you might want to give Arch Linux a try.

wait until .7.1 comes out stable. They are going through a flux right now too. Slackware is great. Got my kernel working and all. Going to try to combine it with the netbsd ports.
