What 's the best Linux distribution for production?

Hi everyone,

I would like to know what the best Linux distribution for production is. A distribution that is lighter with better performance, has the least unnecessary services running and the least third party software included and most importantly the most secure.
I don’t want to worry about installing patches and updates for software that I don’t use. I found Linux is becoming just like Windows, so many software with so many security issues and so many unused services running.

I am looking for a plain solid OS for production.

If you have any recommendation please share it with me.

You need to be more specific as to what services you want. But if it's a business environment I would recommend CentOS.

Yes, it's for business production environment, web hosting in particular and other production processing.

Try any of the major distributions listed at DistroWatch.com ... but then, maybe one of the minor ones is better, just hasn't had a chance to become as well known yet. Try a few of those, too.

While you're trying a few dozen, to make sure you get one that's satisfactory to you, think about this: If there was a "best one," we'd all be using it, and there wouldn't be 300 or so for you to choose from.

Ark Linux (runs well on i586, i686, pentium 2/3/4, and AMD) and Yoper (optimized for i686) are pretty optimized for speed, though personally I prefer Ark because it's made for newbies while still maintaining the power and features for experts. It even comes with addon CDs (server, games, development, extra software, and languages).Also, the Ark developers refuse to preload any proprietary software (the only proprietary program in their repos is flash), though you can easily install most proprietary software on your own if you so choose. Both distros have a good repository. Mostly, though, it's up to you and your own personal needs. If you don't like Ark or Yoper, check distro watch and slashdot, and see what other users here have to say.
