Hi,
Ubuntu is a Debian-based distribution. Many Linux distributions are based on RedHat or Debian. I've always wanted to try Debian but was put off by two things. First, it was known as difficult to install and configure. Second, I like to use alot of multimedia apps and Debian is also known as a highly "stable" distribution and they tend to sacrifice "cutting edge" for this "stability". Thats not to say you can't do multimedia in Debian, just that it would take much more configuring using plain text-files and perhaps recompiling kernels. I didn't want to be bothered with that initially.
I read an article on slashdot (
www.slashdot.com) that compared FC3 with Ubuntu and it concluded that, while overall it is a "draw", Ubuntu is better with multimedia! Since I just put FC3 on my machine specifically for multimedia, I had to give Ubuntu a shot.
Overall, I prefer Ubuntu--I'm using Warty Warhog (RIDICULOUS names
. Bear in mind, however, that I'm only using Ubuntu for a week or so.
Ubuntu found my apacer 6-in-1 usb-media drive, which no version of RH could find. Also, setting things up was a breeze.
I've used RH 7.2 to 9.0 and Fedora Core 1, 2, 3 and now I'm running RH Enterprise Linux on one system and Ubuntu on the other.
I do have one problem currently which is really annoying. Everytime I reboot, my symlink to /dev/dvd is gone!!! I don't know why, I've used xine to play dvds before and I've made links before ( ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/dvd OR ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd OR ln -s hdc dvd while in /dev etc..etc...)
I thought it might have to do with automounting, but I disabled that and the problem persists. Anybody have any ideas???
Thanks.
