I haven't got SuSE 7.1 to run in a stable way on any of my systems yet so it NEEDs to be *improved*!

Seriously - the paid for tech support is a joke - never anyone answering the phone

-and I could have written an OS quicker than this

SuSE may be a great distro, no doubt, but support is very poor.

I bought 7.0 knowing it was out of date, but I figured I'd use it for evaluation and if I decided I liked SuSE, I'd upgrade.

Great plan, except SuSE won't honor the pledge printed on the outside of their product to give me 60 days free support; they say support ends a few weeks after a new version comes out.

Don't misunderstand -- I'm not saying my 60 days was reduced to a few weeks... I'm saying SuSE won't honor their committment by giving me even one day of support. They lied. There is absolutely no mention printed anywhere on their product explaining any kind of limitation or restriction.

All they printed was a promise of 60 days free support -- which they now fail to honor.

Too bad -- it really could be a good distro.

Sorry, you *REALLY* shouldnt need support to install SuSE.

Funny, i found the limitations of the support both on the website and the box before i purchased my copy. Seems to me someone should try a little reading for themselves

i sense alot of negative attitude from you. this isn't a RTFM site to make others feel scared to ask questions. either help people out or keep comments like these to yourself. i am not trying to be rude or anything, except this forum we try to help anyone and everyone as they come and go, and we never tell them to go RTFM type answers.

In response to the post by SICKBOY:

First of all, yes it's easy to get SuSE installed, but almost everyone has questions about tweaking, tuning and customizing. I did get through the installation without any trouble but I would have liked SuSE to help me with follow-up issues related to installation.

Secondly, I did not post my comment without first looking over the SuSE 7.0 box carefully (personal version). Now I've looked it over twice and still cannot find any mention of a restriction, qualification or cut-off for support. What version are you looking at?

Lastly, I sincerely thank the moderator TrickyKid for trying to keep the tone of discussions here civil, but I don't think we've descended into a true, nasty flame war just yet. However, your point is well taken, I do understand it's better to post helpful comments.

probably easiest if i just leave this forum alone.

it wont have anything to offer me except your constant harrassment and criticism of my answers

am i allowed to post a link to a site that will help someone or is that considered telling them to RTFM as well?

it wasn't meant like that. your are more than welcome here. sending someone a link is a nicer way of giving them info that is going to help them out, its not necessarily telling them to RTFM. I send people to links all the time, it makes it easier so if I am answering their question, I don't have to type it all myself, if some site already has it typed up. We just try to keep it nice and informative here, not to be so critical to others and opinions.

To tell you the truth, at times I want to go off on some people, this site has an awesome search function, and sometimes it seems no one uses it. I don't know how many times I have answered something like how to configure X in Redhat or something like that.... Probably at least of my 1800 or so posts, probably I bet 100 or more is something with Xconfigurator in the answer..
oh well, I still give them the answer if I am the first to it though.

But no, you don't have to go anywhere else, cause why would you, this is the best place to either ask or post questions and answers.

to change it so you don't recieve email everytime someone replies to a thread you have posted to, goto yout user cp link at top, and under edit options, you will find your option to click that email notification off.

OK, let me rephrase my previous post in a more constructive manner.

This is just what i do, and bsed on mistakesin the past, before i like to buy something these days, i think its worthwhile to go and check out the manufacturers website to get all the info i can on a product. i also like to try and read some "independent" reviews to try and get an unbiased picture of it before buying as wel

OK, confession time for me: despite my earlier complaints, I ordered SuSE 7.3 anyway!! I figured after all, why use a rebellious, counter-culture, nonconformist OS and then get exactly the same distribution that everyone else does? (No offense RH, I've got nothing against you.)

Thing is Trickykid you often only know what to search for if you already know the answer . Sometimes its even worse - you don't even know what the right question was until long after you have a solution ( . . 42 . . )

I did better with SuSE Linux - I got a very neat coverdisk which ran the distro from the CD without having to install on the hard drive. I was very impressed. I actually benchmarked some apps provided and explored the system fairly thoughly both with KDE (smooth, fast, robust in that implementation) and from the command line ('recognisable as the Unix of my youth' ). The problems that I've actually hit with the real distro relate to the difficult problem (for the Linux world) of having enough drivers to support a broad range of mainstream hardware.
