Small Server oriented Distr

Hi,

I'm looking for a Linux distro that is biased towards appliance style servers.

In addition I need a small installation size and am willing to forgo X windows and desktop style tools.

Any pointers ?

Regards,
Andrew

Hi,

I'd definitely recommend Debian. Fast, secure, easy to install (hardware providing), lots of server software to choose from, and the installation is fully customisable. You can install as much or as little as you want, including leaving out the GUI bits.

Cheers,

Jamie.

Is it a requirment that it be Linux? I may recommend FreeBSD or NetBSD. Both are great for network appliance servers... what is going to actually be the role of the server??

Hi,

I have dabbled with FreeBSD and found it was pretty good as an embedded OS. I am trying to be OS neutral but want to keep the number of systems that I have to know to a reasonable number

As to what I want the device todo, I want to construct a system that is capable of providing DNS, DHCP, simple HTTP, possibly host a system management/monitoring tool and that is a good base for producing custom devices.

Regards,
Andrew

I would recommend Gentoo, as you can truely install as little or as much as you want, relitivly light (without anything installed). Very up-to-date, and can be modelled into any enviroment. I use gentoo on my server and my desktop pc.

5 stars for gentoo.
