I've just spend the weekend and a bit downloading slackware from a damn UK ftp site. Unknowingly, I've just went into the slackware-current directory and gone sick, only to find out this morning at work that there is a version 8.0 out, and on top of that a 2.4 kernel.
A bit more looking tells me that 8.0 doesn't use the 2.4 kernel, that I'd have to upgrade the kernel myself.
Can someone tell me whether I should download 8.0 to do an install or is it not too much of a hassle to upgrade from 7.2 to 8 then do the kernel on top of that?
thanks.
slackware 8 has been out for a fair while, i guess their site must be pretty lazy if you got 7.2 without noticing 8...
ive not used slack, but i'm fairly sure there's no offical 'upgrade' option, that's only in posher (?) distro's like RH.
you can install 7.2 if you want to, and then manually upgrade the newer packages that you wish to use, but to know which upgrades you want to make is a bit vague really... personally i'd dl 8. 8 still uses the 2.2 branch kernel by default tho, i'm not sure why. you can easily install 2.4 as well tho.
I read a post here earlier where someone said to install everything and then remove what you don't want. I'd like to do it the other way, and maybe install just the a and n parts off the floppy disks, once that's happening and I@m happy with it, add more components that I'd like.
What's the thought / suggestions on this?
firstly, slackware 8.0 does come with, and install kernel 2.4. if you want to install slackware 8.0 with reiserfs support, you will need to tell the installer to load the 2.4 kernel.
When you insert the cd, and it gets to the lilo prompt, youll see it says something like "press f1 for options" so then press f1. then to see details of the kernels available for booting, press f2.
i thnk the one you need to type on the prompt is something like bare245i or something like that. that way, when you boot off this kernel image, when it gets to the bit about formating partitions, reiserfs willbe an option, not just ext2.
And as for upgrading, i wouldnt bother, slackware doesnt have any dep checking, and as such the upgrade will prob just break your system, plus there were a lot of major upgrades from the 7 series to 8.0
