I am sorry .. I got mixed up between Suse 9.3 and Knoppix 4.0
yes .. they announced it long ago that 4.0 will only be release in dvd ..
I guess you do need a dvd (writer) .. I am sure one can hack it, but it's probably not worth the trouble .. there will be another version in 2/3 months and there are plenty of other distro's around which are plenty good ..

Hello. Can anyone offer instructions or advice on how to install Knoppix to my HD? I know the command IGNORE_CHECK=1 sudo knoppix-installer, but haven't gotten much further than that.
I can't partition from within knoppix-installer: it reports that my HD is read-only (although I solved that by using Partition Magic from Windows). With the HD partitioned successfully, I have tried to install, but it results in a complicated error message I do not understand. Are there any settings I have to make sure are correct?
Perhaps the following advice from the Knoppix "HD Install how to" should be kept in mind;
Quote:
Knoppix is designed & intended to be used as a GNU/Linux LiveCD and not a HD installed Linux distro. A HD installed Knoppix will give you a running GNU/Linux system but it is not easy to support or administrate and add/remove of software is complicated and is best left to GNU/Linux experts. Examples of such issues can be found in the Hdd Install / Debian / Apt forum (http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=5). If you a new user and not a GNU/Linux expert & want a HD installed system then skip the LiveCDs and go directly to a distro designed to be installed to a HD, for example Debian
Sounds like pretty good advice to me - your choice of course.
How different is Debian from Knoppix, if at all? Isn't that supposed to be the distribution favored by nerds (which would make it all the more attractive)? I have tried Mandrake and Knoppix so far, and I prefer Knoppix for two reasons: the menus are more aesthetically pleasing, and it appears to have more applications than Mandrake--it comes with Wine installed, whereas my Mandrake did not.
Maybe I should have cited the next sentence as well;
Quote:
Once Knoppix is installed on a hard drive, it's no longer a Knoppix LiveCD but a Debian based GNU/Linux system. Something to note is that Debian developers/users/mentors do not consider Knoppix installed to a hard drive to truly be Debian. They will not support Knoppix users
Time for you to do some searching - start withh the zillions of "which is the best distro" threads here on LQ.
Joshknape, I don't know what version you are trying to install but what I do with 3.7 is boot the LiveCD, open a terminal, su( just type root), and enter knx2hd.
