I installed Gentoo without using a network thinking I could just plug in my cable connection after the install and be able to download the updates for KDE etc after first reboot.. but I guess I was wrong.
I'm pretty sure I setup dhcp and everything correctly but for some reason when I run
Code:
emerge --usepkg kde
it starts to work until it gets to about 22/92 and then it trys to download kde-base-3.4.1 from an FTP and it says it failed so it aborts on me.
I booted up with the install disk and tried to configure it using the Configuring your network instructions near the front of the 2005.1 installation manual but no prevail. Yes I have my cable connection connected to my PC and it is working because I'm using it right now.
At a guess it was just the mirror you were using, it sometimes happens with me. But next time, maybe give people a little more time to respond please. Assuming you got things going, it's also courtesy to write a quick update explaining what the problem was so that others can learn from it they encounter the same thing.
Okay, so it can't find eth0. What network do you have in your machine? "lspci" will display your devices, detailing your network card. Check online to see which module should be loaded for this card. You might need to go back into your kernel config and enable the appropriate module. If the module is already compiled, simply

Code:
modprobe module_name
and then try bringing your interface up.
My ethernet is onboard. Will lspci show me the information I need to get the name of the module even though it's onboard? or maybe in the motherboard handbook?
Incase you want to know my MB is an asus A7N8X-E "deluxe".

Heh. Sorry I didn't know. I'll read up on the LQ rules :P
No idea about the board, but am guessing probably a realtek chipset. lspci should still give us the info - paste the output back on here, or hope someone knows the exact module required for that board (best to the work yourself though )
I went into the kernel config and looked under device drivers and saw that the Marvell Yukon Chipset wasn't selected, so I selected it, rebuilt the kernel and restarted without the disk and it worked :]
New problem, though, it's giving me an error when I try to emerge kde
I run
Code:
emerge --usepkg kde
and it downloads kde-base-3.4.1, etc and then it configures which goes good, then when it trys to compile it gives me an error which says if you need support use the topmost compile error, so here it is:
Code:
grep: /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.5-20050130/libstdc++.la: no such file or directory
there's 3 more errors after that one but they all relate to that file path and "no such file or directory"
So I'm guessing something I need to compile isn't installed? a hint on what I need to do would be appreciated :]
I've run emerge gcc, emerge --sync and emerge -u world and im still getting the same error.
Okay, well seeing as no one here cares about this problem or just doesn't know how to solve it I shall post my fix on this:
First off, I've read this is a common problem and there's a lot of information on it at gentoo.org
My fix was this:
Code:
fix_libtool_files.sh OLD GCC VERSION
fix_libtool_files.sh OLD GCC VERSION --oldarch OLD ARCH VERSION
env-update
source /etc/profile
the "OLD GCC VERSION" should be replaced by the old version of GCC. You will see the it in the compilation error you are getting. It's probably something like "3.3.5-20050130"
the "OLD ARCH VERSION" is the old arch version, you can see what version you need to put here by checking the compliation error you are getting. Probably something like "i386-pc-linux-gnu"
If this doesn't help then search the gentoo.org forums.
