Need more information. Are you having trouble with the cd? Or, have you installed the system and not set a root password? Or, have you gotten stuck in the middle of an install and locked the desktop?
in gentoo when you first install, the root pw is scrambled so you have to go to the console, press ctl-alt-F1 then in the root console type passwd and then type your new password, then you will be able to log in as root
I do not want to install Gentoo, i just want to load it, live cd like(knoppix) and login with 'root'.
I can log in with some other login, but i need to login with root!
I had the same issue. You do exactly what humbabba said <ctrl><alt><F1> and you will get the root console where you can reset the password using the 'passwd' command.
To get BACK to the GUI try <ctrl><alt><F7> (or one of the Function keys to bring you back to the GUI window. The console window says to type "gdm" or "startx" but X is already running so this won't work.
