You can stop the install at (almost) anytime.Plus you can install the base system and compile the rest while you got another Linux running with chroot.Heck - you can install the whole thing with chroot.

Question Questions

I've been the install guide from the Gentoo website. I would like to start with a stage 1. I would like to do it from start to finish. Will it let me do this from the CD's? I ordered all the Gentoo CD's that 'are updated daily'. I really don't want to do this over the net with this slow connection. I may be dead before it finishes. What's the point then.

Anyhow, let me know what you think. Debian may be coming up on the list before long. I'll probably buy a bigger hard drive first.

I really liking Linux. This is much better than windoze.

Thanks for your help. Keep those ideas coming. I need them.

Speaking as someone who has installed Gentoo from Stage 1 from start to finish over a 56k modem I can tell you it'll take about 2-3 days to get the basic system up and running and then about a day or so more to get X and a desktop environment up and running. Unless your chronically impatient, it's perfectly achievable.

If you want, you can install Gentoo from within Mandrake. The proceedure is exactly the same as with a live CD or the Gentoo install CD.

Post This is what I ordered

I ordered Gentoo Linux 1.4 for i686 (2 CD set) and also Gentoo essentials (3 CD set). I was hoping that what I needed would be on those. When I get them I will see what is on them and such.

That's a lot of CD to still have to download more.

I'll go some more. Ask more later when I start to but before I start . Don't want any of that.

Thanks guys. Either way I look forward to getting Gentoo installed. May start at stage 3.
