Floppy distros and MSDOSFS?

I'm trying to put together a small bot on a machine without a harddrive, but I'm trying to figure out why some of the distros use MSDOSFS? Is there a good reason for this (drivers take up less space?). Anyways, to make a long story short, I need support for long filenames in a floppy distro. Any suggestions?

"I'm trying to figure out why some of the distros use MSDOSFS? "

MSDOSFS is supported by Apple, Linux, and Windows so it is an easy way to carry information on floppies between various OSs.

"I need support for long filenames in a floppy distro. Any suggestions?"

If you want long file names then use a file system which supports long file names. I suggest ext2 or fat32. Do not use fat16 or fat12.
