Talking Here is a good one.

After pouring over reviews of Slackware, Debian, Zenwalk, GoblinX, Vectorlinux, and Wolvix... I decided to go with Wolvix.

The newest version of Wolvix is based on Slackware (as opposed to SLAX) and was garnering rave reviews from everywhere... especially from folks with older hardware.

I installed Wolvix-Hunter 1.1.0 to my friend's machine choosing to format the partitions as ReiserFS. I'm sure EXT3 would have been fine, but I read that ReiserFS has a little better performance. Both are Journaling file-systems, as I read, which should be much better for her than ext2.

So far, so good. Wolvix is fast and responsive (much faster than Ubuntu) and used the Slackware cursor... just to let you know what's underneath. The control center is a nice addition, but no where near as useful as a full Gnome or KDE control center. Luckily, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the system so far... except a odd issue where flash audio cannot be heard. I'm sure that won't be a complicated fix though.

All multimedia components are in place, it does everything out of the box without too much bloat. The XFCE is nice, if not particularly striking. The whole thing is much more complete than I expected.

The only software missing is Picasa, but I'm not sure if I want to get it, since I am worried that it is somewhat unstable. So I may be looking for a true linux alternative.

Thanks everyone for your help! Hopefully this will get her up and running for at least a few more months .

EDIT: I like the idea of the batter backup, or UPS, but she just can't afford ANYTHING right now. That's why I'm fussing with this machine. She lives 40 minutes away from me and has dial-up so, as soon as she has enough money, I want her to get a refurbished Mac Mini. I love linux, but it's better for her to be on a system that will not complain as much and will not NEED high-speed access to be productive. So, that's why getting a new system is not an option.

You can special order these from Walmart. Add a little bit of extra RAM.

Hope it is ok to write here. Do I really need to create a new thread?

where can I download Wolvix? I've searched and searched. I need an iso
so I can burn a CD and test it. I'm testing Puppy 4.0 and GoblinX Micro 1.7.2 just now. i'm starting to like small programs. DSL and SliTaz was
too special to appeal to my noob level of knowledge. But Puppy and Goblinx was rather easy to do some surfing in. Austrumi needed recompiling to get Swedish keyboard. Mustang seems to not exist anymore.

Minix was very small but Command Line based if I get it. I failed to get
the Gui going.

so Wolvix would be interesting to test, I heard good things about it.
