Here is what I have done:

Using dselect, I have installed the xserverS3 package and the vS3 package to allow me to use the video acrd. However, each time I try to configure it using XF86Setup I get this error when I click done and it tries to connect to the xserver:

_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111

Now, this doesn't mean anything to me, but I am a bit stuck, as I have installed the required packages but it still doesn't get past this error.

A search on google shows quite a few posts with that expression, so I am not sure what to do. Any ideas? Anyone?

I had this error on a Debian system before and couldn't get it resolved as well. I removed everything to do with X using dselect, rebooted and reinstalled X altogether. After that, the error somehow disappeared.

Using Debian..yes Sir eee! But problems galore!

I enjoy the vicissitudes of using Debian...as a former Red Hat user, I decided it was easier to keep Debian up to date than Red Hat, especially because Red Hat charges to use its intelligent updater. I LOVE the FTP/HTTP updating that is so automatic when you use dselect...a great program.
And my kids LOVE the linux games....better than any other games out there...

I am aggravated though that the guys who wrote the CUPS code, Sane code, etc., the ancillary printer code/drivers/modules/whatever, have made getting printers and scanners a friggin BEAR to get running properly. I have an HP 5P printer and an Epson 850 Stylus and 660 Stylus, all via USB connection. NOT ONE PERIPHERAL WILL WORK and I have tried next to everything. The very installation of Debian ought to result in USB devices working "out of the box" especially when you use the B2.4 flavor which has all of the USB drivers, etc. Why don't they work? Why must it be so difficult to get a printer and scanner to work? I have great respect for those who support Open Source as I do...but as long as Debian code writers don't create a point and click system for getting peripherals online...Open souce will never overtake windows...and I sure do want it to...

I've read the howtos, the Man pages, the forums...despite tinkering along the lines suggested in the FAQs, HOWTOs, etc...printing don't work and scanning is either nonfunctional or poorly-functional. Any ideas guyz?

An aside: I am a 48-year old retired MD who has always loved computers and even programming (my knowlege of programming is poor..FORTRAN IV was as much as I could take...) but for those of us "old" guys who have kids...FORCE your kids to use LINUX...take windows OFF your computer/computers at home...the kids will be better for it and their minds will become more agile. Unix-based and Unix-like O/Ses will always be superior to windows..you geeks are gggrrrreat!
Thanks.
