'Gentoo'ifiying other distros

Some time ago, before I discovered distrowatch and relied on happening across a link to another Linux distro to find them, I remember reading somewhere that it was possible to 'Gentoo'ify a distro, with a set of commands that would essentially install Portage and Emerge on it. (The same thing, I know, but I can never figure out which is the actual name)

I can't remember where exactly I saw it though, and no doubt that since that was several years ago, the instructions are outdated.
So I'm curious, does there still exist a means to do this, and if so, what caveats are there?
If it's possible, I'm thinking of making Ubuntu Karmic the subject of my attempt. As if it wasn't troublesome enough by itself, I'm going to stick Portage on it too.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...re-sid-313648/ has some instructions for performing the operation on sid, however I've not done anything like this since I built a gentoo system over a lfs system that was completely unmaintained for several years so I don't know how good the instructions are (follow the links for some updates from original instructions.) I believe gentoo wiki used to have instructions for doing this on a system too.
