xfce4 panel icon ordering

In slackware64-13.37, even freshly created users, are unable to easily rearrange the order of launcher icons on the xfce4 panels... when right clicking on panel item and selecting "move", a dark vertical insert bar only appears at the beginning of the items, or at the end of the items in the panel, but not in between, to the effect that one can move an item to the beginning or the end, but not in between the middle items, making it inconvenient to arrange the order of the icons.

Has anyone experienced this? This is xfce 4.6.2.

You can adjust the sepertaors to expand or not giving you space or holding the space for other items.

Right Click --> Pannel --> Pannel Prefferences --> Items Menu --> add / edit seperators.

I have some expanding separators in the panel, which i use to divide my panel items categorically... personally i have my apps on the left, and my wicd, the systray, and power status in middle, and sound, clock, and logout on right... but regardless of whether my separators are set to expanding, or empty space, or lines, dots, etc... no matter how they're set, I still can't insert an item, when moving it, into the middle of a group of icons (I used to be able to). Most of my items are lauchers, just displaying an applications's icon, and launching it. I'm accustomed to being able to right click on these panel items, and select move, and just insert them anywhere in the panel, between any of the items. But currently, when I'm moving these items, I can only insert them at beginnings or ends of groups (right next to the separators). I grepped xorg log for xfce4... not sure what logs to look at to try to figure out why item rearrangement is screwed up.
