Unsupported window manager

I have just installed Mint 20.3 Mate on my PC and Laptop. The window manager works on the PC, but not supported on the laptop. It's a fresh install so no going back with Timeshift. Maybe I can re-install the Mate window manger.

You posted. Was that a question? How did you decide your window manager wasn't supported?

Post on the forums here when you want help and provide information.

Might wanna change your title. I came here looking for a Window Manager like Fluxbox, icewm, etc......

Sounds to me with your generalities stated that your laptop is maybe under-powered for mint mate.
Can't say for sure.

The MATE Desktop Environment is the continuation of GNOME 2.
Maybe the xfce edition of mint linux might suit your laptop better?

Laptop is three years old with 16GB RAM and still fairly quick and responsive. It was running Mint 20.2 with no problems. Mint's software manager gives me the option of removing Mate desktop, but then what do I have? I'm thinking install another desktop then re-install Mate desktop as I think something not quite right with the current one installed.

Well. Without a

Code:
inxi -zv8
or even a description of what graphics card, firmware or driver used to drive graphics.
Installing another Desktop Environment may give you the same problems as Mint Mate.

Example of the command above on my box

I like reading 1/4 inch tall text.I could make it smaller but then reading glasses are needed. I know Mint Linux includes the above inxi script.

You obviously didn't read the link I sent you. Let me be clear.
  • Which window manager worked, and which didn't?
  • What were the errors?
  • What have you tried?
  • What's the spec of your machine?
  • One wm doesn't work, but one does. What's wrong?
  • Tell us if there's anything unusual in the logs. DO NOT POST THEM - CHECK THEM YOURSELF.
For your information help is voluntary here - nobody pays anyone. We help you to help yourself, if you're interested?

I've read online certain systemd distros are having trouble with i915 driver depending on which kernel used. Can't find the thread where I read that though.

Code:
Graphics:
Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 620 vendor: Dell driver: i915 v: kernel
Thing is. i915 is the correct driver for your graphics. Since Mate says unacceptable. Just wondering now if you check summed your iso before but you say it runs OK on the other computer? So not sure where to go from here.

Hmmm

Code:
dmesg | grep i915
Might try a different kernel install maybe? I don't dance with systemd distros. Sorry.

Code:
SysVinit v: 2.96

If you remove Mate, you will still have the login manager (lightdm), which may be able to open a terminal in an x session. But for sure you will still have access to TTY. So you could install another desktop environment (or a window manager) there if you wanted using APT.

But there's no reason a new laptop like that can't run mate if that's what you want, just need to understand what your problem is, if there is one...

What do you have against systemd and what do you use?
Everything is working fine and the only reason I got tangled up in this "unsupported WM" was I to use "Alt click" to move a window. No biggy as "Alt F7" works fine. So maybe I'll accept things the way they are; maybe try another kernel.

Like I said Mate is running fine; just this one small glitch. I'm gonna forget about it and carry on. Thanks all.

defaults to /usr/bin. I posted earlier what I use . Ignores /usr/local/bin text files.

Code:
SysVinit v: 2.96
Ever try to edit a systemd call command? Gedit or leafpad or vim or nano can't handle it. systemctl is a can of worms.
Just my druthers. I am sure it is fine for what it does. Just not interested.

I wonder. I just backed up an OS image in case I screwed up; then removed mate desktop and re-installed it with the same problem "Current WM not supported".
