Remote Desktop Sharing

Please bear with me - new to all this Linux stuff.

I've got Mandriva 2007 Spring One on both my wireless laptop and a PC upstairs, and I want to be able to remotely control the PC from the laptop. Thought I'd try first by issuing a Personal Invitation from the PC, which tells me that you can use any VNC client to connect and in KDE that is 'Remote Desktop Connection'.

Well I can't find Remote Desktop Connection in Mandriva on my laptop so thought I'd install TightVNC. However when I put the PC's IP into TightVNC's dialogue box it just sits there and eventually time expires and closes.

BTW the laptop is able to access the network and the internet via my router when booted into XP, and can access the internet in Mandriva though not yet the network - haven't figured that out yet.

Help much appreciated.

First do some checks:

1) can each machine ping the other?
2) can you ssh into each machine from the other?

If yes to 1-2 above, then:

1-a) are you typing into tightvnc <your remote pc's IP address:5901 or IP address:01>?

2-b) have you verified that tightvncserver is running on the remote pc? Use the command ps -aux and look through the list for an entry for vncserver

Hope this helps,

Deion "Mule" Christopher

Neither seems to be able to ping the other, though both can ping a Vista machine on the network.

Slightly puzzled though, because I closed the lappie and put it on charge while I went off to have some lunch, and when I returned the PC had received its pings back. When I try it now though, in either direction, the command just hangs - doesn't even return me to the prompt.

I don't think I shall need to install the tightvnc server on the PC, as when I issued the invitation the system was saying any VNC client could connect once provided with the password.
