Octave won't install because of dependency

Hello everyone I recently tried to install Octave on SUSE 10.0 and ran into some problems. I un-tar the file and and then typed

$ ./configure

at this point the following showed up:

Jeff@linux:~/octave-2.1.73> ./configure
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
See `config.log' for more details.

I don't know how to get a C compiler in $PATH, and I don't really know where to find config.log to get more details. If anyone can help me with this problem I would appreciate it. Thanks.

You need to install the "gcc" compiler using your distro's package manager. I think on Suse it is called Yast.

I have not used Suse before, but try searching for Octave in Yast or find an RPM on the internet and install that. That way, you don't need to worry about the compiler. I think Yast should also deal with any other dependencies for you.

Just a tip, install GNUPlot as well - then you can plot graphs using Octave.

I hope this helps
