Question Lubuntu and Xubuntu don't seem to co-exist. What should I do?

Hi! All you fellow Ubuntu fans. I can't login to Xubuntu.
I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.10. I don't love Unity. I've been enjoying Gnome though. I'd still like something lighter for my little ASUS eee1005HAb with 2GB-RAM. After playing with both LUBUNTU and XUBUNTU on a live flash drive I installed the “lubuntu-desktop” package and later, the “xubuntu-desktop” package. I have a whole long list of different sessions to login to. Alas,I can't login to over half of them.

I CAN login to: Lubuntu, LXDE, GNOME, Ubuntu, & GNOME/Open Box. I CAN'T login to Lubuntu-Netbook; Xubuntu-Session, XFCE, KDE/OpenBox (where the heck did THAT come from?), GNOME Classic, or Ubuntu 2D.

It's not all bad, I rather like LXDE and Lubuntu. But, what's up with all this? Also, How can I get Xubuntu? What did I break? I rather suspect that LXDE & XFCE are at the bottom of this. It may be that I can't have one if I have the other. In that case, How do I go about switching back & forth?

Let me point out that this is all one installation, and one partition. Thanks for your help & reading this far!

Which Login Manager did you end up installing?

GDM,KDM,Slim,or LXDM?

There are many choices on which Login Manager to use.

Hi rokytnji,
I didn't know which to choose, so I went with LXDM for my login manager. If I do an "apt-get remove lubuntu-desktop" will I be able to re-install with a more compatible one?
Thanks!

to change login manager. If me. I would just go into package manager and install GDM to see if your problem goes away. It should uninstall LXDM during the install process. LXDM is still pretty much in the experimental stage yet.

I run Slim login manager in my AntiX core LXDE install. I don't use any other sessions in it though besides LXDE. I use Slim mostly on everything (my open box window manager installs in AntiX) except for Ubuntu 10.04LTS (I use GDM for Ubuntu).

Thanks for your help. I tried installing GDM and I got it, but it didn't solve the Xubuntu login problem. I tried to uninstall Lubuntu desktop and that didn't help either and I Could NOT uninstall LXDE (I logged in using gnome). Fortunately, I fool around like this a lot, and I have excellent backups. I've got Xubuntu 11.10 running on a clean install right now. I'll see how to build lubuntu around it. The big lesson from this is the difference between the desktop environment and the Login Manager.

Sorry, but my Ubuntu install is solo Gnome 2. My dualboots are AntiX and Puppy and I either use grub4dos or grub legacy for boot managing. In AntiX I use Fluxbox and Icewm for dual windows managers and slim for logging in to either Desktop. Puppy just boots straight to Desktop with no login manager since Puppy runs as root.

So I am not proficient with Ubuntu and running different dual or triple Desktop environments.
Even my LXDE Desktop is solo, with AntiX core iso install with slim login manager.

Glad to hear

Good luck with it and Happy Trails, Rok
