Install Ubuntu with minimal software

Hello everyone,

I am in the process of downloading Xubuntu however I would like to install it with the minimal software possible.
All I am looking for is a gui and a text editor and not more. I do not care about office,games..etc.
Is there anyway to customize the installation or do I have to uninstall the software later on after I finish installation.

If there is any other distro which provides better customization with the installation process , please let me know.

Thank you

I would suggest that you install the basic Debian distribution from any dvd. When prompted about extra packages including web environment do not select anything. This will give you a basic command line install. You can then install a lighter gui like xfce and maybe vim-full package as editor. That should be enough for your needs, I think.
Otherwise you can get the xfce cd from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/re...1/i386/iso-cd/ but that may install many other extra packages.
The first option is best though, i personally feel. use a dvd put basic command line install. Then type aptitude install -y xfce vim-full
That should be enough. If you have problems do get back.

As the above post states, Debian is good.

If you want to stick with Ubuntu but just get rid of all the programs, use the alternate install disk, as indicated in the following guide:
