I would suggest that you install the basic Debian distribution from any dvd. When prompted about extra packages including web environment do not select anything. This will give you a basic command line install. You can then install a lighter gui like xfce and maybe vim-full package as editor. That should be enough for your needs, I think.
Otherwise you can get the xfce cd from
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/re...1/i386/iso-cd/ but that may install many other extra packages.
The first option is best though, i personally feel. use a dvd put basic command line install. Then type aptitude install -y xfce vim-full
That should be enough. If you have problems do get back.
