Question How to get a self-compiled Metisse run automatically in runlevel 5?

Hi everybody.

Recently I compiled Metisse and played with it for a while (actually long enough to like it). Its documentation explains how to run it manually [through "startx", together with X]. However, when it comes to replacing "the original desktop environment with a Metisse-based one", they suggest finding a "local X11 guru", who "might be able to figure out ...".

I am very far from being a guru, but I suppose I have to change something in /etc/inittab and probably in initscripts.

BTW, I am preparing to compile KDE. I know the entire KDE session can be run manually from within Metisse environment, but I would rather prefer to have it run automatically, with Metisse as a desktop manager. The documentation says it's possible, but again it's up to the gurus...

Any hints? I'd be very greatful.

Are you booting directly to runlevel 5 and then logging in with some sort of session manager(GDM/KDM etc)?

If so - you should just be able to create a custom session for your session manager to run all of the stuff you need it to. (I know that's vague - but I still haven't used Metisse enough to understand its commands and how it manages things.)

Yes, I am booting directly into runlevel 5. I do not have GDM/KDM - I currently log in using X tools only [that's XDM, as far as I understand]. I do not mind logging in this way, all I want is to have metisse start after that.
When I start it manually [in runlevel 3], I type "startx", it reads my ~/.xinitrc, particularly
Quote:
Xmetisse -ac -geometry 1024x768 :1 &
metisse-start-fvwm -wd :1
and runs metisse.
"top" displays some processes running:
- Xmetisse, and
- some fvwm-related straff
- X server
I can run them manually from an xterm [in runlevel 5] by typing
Quote:
Xmetisse -ac -geometry 1024x768 :1 &
metisse-start-fvwm -wd :1
Still no idea how to automate it...

Check the second post out on this site.

Hopefully that will get you up and running somewhat.

Thanks, xpromisex

Not to repeat the contents of the forum thread you kindly pointed to, it was enough to copy ~/.xinitrc to ~/.xsessions and it worked. Manual startup [via "startx"] reads the first file, while automatic run reads the second one.
Thanks again,
