Command-line creation of Gnome launcher, like ln -s?

Is there a command to create gnome-launchers from the command line? I know about ln -s, but symbolic links are not suitable for the Desktop or the Panel. I'd like to know the command for creating launchers because I want to have a script which automatically creates all launchers I want in the Panel on every fresh install of Ubuntu.

The launchers are plain-text .desktop files you can just create with a text editor. Just take a look at some existing ones, e.g. /usr/share/applications/gedit.desktop and theres a spec too if you're interested in details: http://standards.freedesktop.org/des...y-spec/latest/

The best way I have found to view .desktop files is to
1. Open the Text Editor.
2. Drag and drop a link from the menu or desktop onto the text editor.
