Welcome to LQ!

Don't know. What OS? Fedora shows your profile on the left?

Under some yum-based systems:
Code:
sudo yum install vlc
and when prompted for your password, enter it.
It will not show. Nothing appears to 'work' when entering passwords. That is as planned.

An additional repo may be necessary.

Here are instructions to reset a forgotten Fedora 25 root password:

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US..._Password.html

Your post is short on details, so I had to make a lot of assumptions/guesses how best to help you. If you are not running Fedora 25, or if you've forgotten the password to some account other than the root password, then the burden is on you to supply more information.

ps VLC is not in the Fedora repositories... so, how did you install it?
