Simple pull based Linux configuration management

I am a newbie linux administrator. I am investigating conf management tools for the last weeks. All this chef, salt, cfengine, puppet... seem overcomplicated to me. I found some tools like synctool, fabric and some bash based push approaches seems easier but my concern is; what happens my clients are offline/not ready?

None of them offers some polling mechanism. Even ansible-pull seems complicated. Should I cronjob to push or follow output manually for my policies applied everytime? Could somebody suggest ideas for converting push to pull based or some easy to use tool with agent, I could only find "slaugter" seems promising but its based on perl. I prefer to use shell scripting or python based solution.

Thank you for answer. I actually saw that thread ;just another ansible ending. Maybe i should start learning ansible ,instead of searching, any other suggestions are still appreciated.
