Linux+ is more Red Hat based, while LPIC is more vendor neutral - Debian, RH, and SUSE. This is what I have heard, and can't confirm. I have been taking Linux+ practice exams, each time scoring higher, but I also purchased a book to help study for the LPIC 101 and 102 exams. I may get both certs, not positive.
Having passed linux+ about a month ago, i'm curious: how much easier?
And: is there any real benefit to having both?
Hi all,
I came across this old post... Just to start... Is there someone able to answer to ewinner's questions?
I just got the Linux+ Certification and I'm thinking about the LPIC (1 and maybe 2).
Should I focus my efforts on RHCT and RHCE?
I've been using Linux at home (everyday) for more than 7 years but my professional experience as Linux System Administrator is short (I always worked in MS environments).
Thanks for your answers!

Well I cleared RHCE a year ago. RHCE is worth in industry as it's performance based exam. RHCE format is now changed btw, exam is of 3 hours now.
LPIC is not performance based. So somewhat smart paper 'kings' can pass the exam (it's what I read once somewhere... don't know exactly about it...)
A guy I know got 10% salary raise after he cleared RHCE... ;-) And there is no need of having good amount of sys admin experience to start prep of RHCE. A little is enough (for me it was)
Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately there aren't scheduled dates for the RHCE exam in my city in the next few months so I'll take before the LPIC-1 and I'll take the RHCE as soon as I can.
I am taking this exam in a few weeks and wanted to ask you how bad was it? Were you surprised by how hard the questions were or did you find you had enough study and knowledge to pass the exam. Just trying to gauge its level of difficulty. I have been using guides and books to study but there is no real way to know if what I am studying is even covered or relevant to the certification questions.

Hi Carlwill,
The exam wasn't too difficult. But in order to pass it you need to do practice quizzes. There is a lot of software that you can download as free trial but, obviously, they are limited. If you want you can buy the full version that usually costs around $80 but if you sign up to braindumps.com you will find hundreds of questions that are very similar to the real questions.
By the way I recommend that you study well networking (ifconfig, route, iptables, netstat, dig, arp, etc...), and unfortunately lilo and XFree86 (they are old but 2 weeks ago I took the 2004 exam and it covers this topics). I'm assuming that you already know perfectly permissions, basic shell commands, user and groups management, piping, redirections, file editing, printer administration... basically, you should have a strong knowledge of a Linux system.
Here you will find the questions that I mentioned before:
Just in case anyone is taking Linux+ soon. I believe they're updating the questions / material objectives by Jan 2010 if they have not done so already. I called CompTIA and they explained it will be very soon!

If you want to get technical, I think LPIC is more exclusive but popular is Linux+ due to the fact that it's more common. Both are great. I would get the Linux+ first and move ahead from there.

I'm not saying that CompTIA certs are easy but it's pretty well known that CompTIA covers topics more generally than LPI. I do agree that both would be advantageous. But start with the Linux+
