Linux+ Certification Study Help

So after using Linux for 4 years I would think I would get my Linux+ certification from Comptia however I am not really sure what appears on the exam or how much the exam has changed over the years. Can someone who has recently taken the exam please let me know what is the best study material in relation to the questions or material that appears on the test.

Thanks!

I guess one question is which Linux+ exam, as it's currently undergoing revision. I've taken the new beta, and it doesn't really match the new objectives as closely as I expected.

Get the official study material... use practice tests from something like Preplogic.

According to Comptia the test revision does not take place until the fall so it is still the 2004 objectives. I checked with Preplogic and they offer nothing for Linux at all. Does anyone know a company that does support practice towards the Linux+ 2004 certification?

If you really want the older Linux+ exam from 2004, I suggest that you find an older Linux+ book on Amazon.

However, that means you'll need to download and install older distros such as Fedora 1, SUSE 8 (?), and Turbolinux.

According to Comptia 2004 is not older. It is current. The test you take today or next week will still cover objectives found on what you call 'older' material. When the test is refreshed to the 2009 objectives, then you will need to make sure the study material you're searching is also updated to the 2009 objectives from Comptia's revised test.

I guess I will just study what I can since there is no real suggested material here...

I took the CompTIA Linux+ test around 3 years ago, and all I used was experience, and the Sybex Linux+ study guide.

I can tell you that you will need to know a lot about Red Hat, Debian, and general package manipulation. The test spends more time on RPM than any other package management, know your basic utilities (vi, sed, awk, grep, etc...) and learn about RPMs.

It wasn't that hard, but it wasn't as easy as I figured it would be. The questions may be a little outdated, but they still apply to any current distro.

I can suggest the Sybex Linux+ study guide, and you will probably want something else, because without the years of experience I have had on linux, I would have failed, because the book covers only about 1/2 of what you need to know.

Most people will tell you it isn't worth it also, but it has opened a few doors for me, and at the very least, gets your foot in the door and looks good on a resume.

I am pretty sure that is the book I have, I will have to check. I am at work right now so I can't.

If you need to know anything else, just ask. I will be happy to help in any way I can.
