Red Hat and LPIC
I completed LPIC-1 a little over a year ago. The exam tests for knowledge of rpm-based and Debian distributions.
Red Hat certification is specific to Red Hat systems and contains a practical component to their exam.
I am a database programmer, and pursued certification as part of getting plunged into the Linux environment, so I could rely less on outside consultants when I needed to do things like build a new system, install software, tweak the network, or write Linux software for our Linux-based database applications.
Edit:
-------------------------------------
Each exam was $150.00 (USD), and I purchased three certification books. I did purchase some audio/visual training materials that turned out not to be as good as the $180.00 (aproximate) in certification books. Also, I put in a lot of time studying and playing around with a Linux system for nearly six months.
----------------------------------------
It was a lot of work and worth it.
