Median is a legitimate average. It all depends on how the figure was calculated.
The averages that I can think of off the top of my head are
- Arithmetic Mean: The sum of the data set over the number of items in the data set (This is the most commonly used average)
- Geometric mean: multiply the each item in data set and take it to root of the data set.
- Harmonic mean: I don't really understand this but I know it is used in situations where you have rapidly increasing data set e.g. Average mpg
- Mode/Modal: Is simply the most common value in the data set
- Median: The vale of the item in the data set that has an index of half the total number of items in the data set

I would guess (but it is only a guess) that 480 is the [arithmetic]mean average and that a few low scores have dragged this down. This is impossible to say without looking at the dataset or at least having more information (such as which type of average and standard deviations).
Has anyone taken the LPIC 1 exam and passed???
