private or public IP for mailer under a Windows emulator

Hello

I am contemplaing about installing my favourite mailer on Icognito.
"Unfortunately" it does only run under MS Windows, so the installation
of a Windows emulator like VMware would be required...

Since I am new to Icognito, I don't know if that is even possible (for me :-)
Nevertheless I would like to know:

Would that mailer use "private" IP's of the Windows guest OS, or the public
IP's giveen by the ISP to me/Icognito(HostOS)?

Thank's a lot for any feedback!

John

Ops. I wrote a confusing reply since I misread your post. Let's try again:

The answer is that if you ran a windows guest within Incognito, it would in no way leak your real IP address. However, I believe it's next to implossible for you to installa virtual machine in Incognito. Sorry.

By the way, what's wrong with Thunderbird?

TB is fine for most cases...

Does that mean, in order to keep away my real IP
in email-headers the mentioned scenario is not even required?

Thank's

Which scenario?

In any case, when it comes to email clients + Tor it should mention that there has been very little research on how safe that is. I've done some rudimentary research on the most obvious leak, and Thunderbird in Incognito is safe with respect to that (but there can be other faral leaks too). I wouldn't use that combination if my life depended on it, thoug.

The safest way to use email with Tor currently is to use a webmail service that doesn't rely on JavaScript (like lavabit.com) in Firefox with Torbutton enabled (the default in Incognito). If you are dead serious about anonymity you should also use PGP encryption since normal unecrypted email is about as private as sending a postcard through the real worls mail system (i.e. anyone can read it). For that I'd recommend the FireGPG Firefox addon (ships with Incognito) since it can interface with any webmail service (see the Incognito walkthrough).
